On peut dire que Mitch Pileggi en a vu défiler des paysages ! Son père travaillant comme Directeur des opérations pour une société rattachée au Département de la Défense, sa famille dû déménager à de nombreuses reprises. Mitch passa donc une bonne partie de son enfance en Turquie, puis il fit ses études universitaires en Allemagne. Engagé pas la même compagnie que son père en Arabie Saoudite, il fera alors la navette entre les Etats-Unis et l'Arabie, il travailla également en Iran pour une autre compagnie.

Après la chute du gouvernement du Shah, il retourne vivre aux Etats-Unis, plus précisement à Austin au Texas, où il commence sa carrière d'acteur dans une compagnie théâtrale. Il ira ensuite s'installer en Californie où il enchaîne alors les petits rôles dans diverses séries. Le personnage qui le révèlera aux yeux de tous est sans nul doute l'infâme Horace Pinker dans le film Shocker de Wes Craven. Plus tard il auditionnera à plusieurs reprises pour X-Files et finira par obtenir le rôle qui finira de le faire connaître, celui de Walter Skinner Directeur Adjoint du FBI.
